USYVL-dec-newsletter-header

 December 2009

Dear USYVL Families,

Welcome to the December issue of "Every Child Plays" focused on the Holidays.

Holidays are a time to spend more time with friends and family and be thankful for the memories we created throughout the past year. At USYVL we will remember the outstanding families who donated so much to help other families in need this year. Additionally, we received many e-mails from parents about the fantastic job their volunteer coaches were doing this year.

We have heard from a number of families that they are spending part of the holidays with new friends made during the past volleyball season. It is nice to see that USYVL players are making lasting friendships.

We would like to remind you to register early by December 15, 2009 for the upcoming Spring 2010 season to receive the early registration discounted rate. Once again, we are asking every mom and dad, including you, to consider coaching your child's team. As you will see from reading below, the number one gift you can give your child is your time. I know some people might think it is a bike, ball or game; but these things should simply encourage your family to spend more time together.

On behalf of the USYVL, I thank you for your ongoing support and enthusiasm for our wonderful sport.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Randy Sapoznik
Executive Director

USYVL Director Assists in National Team training:

randy-36inch-vertical

USYVL Executive Director and  founder Randy “The Hammer” Sapoznik’s love, passion and knowledge of the game was recently tapped into by the Men’s US National Team. Assistant coach Gary Sato gave Randy his nickname “The Hammer” year’s ago when Randy and Gary were playing on the Los Angeles Athletic Club team together. Recently when the team needed an edge and they needed someone who could “bring the heat,” Gary brought in Randy to help run a few drills with the team. 2008 Olympians, Rich Lambourne, Riley Salmon & Tom Hoff are in the gym fine tuning their skills with a number of the newer players before going overseas for the pro-leagues. Randy’s current involvement includes helping run the passing and digging drills. The daily practices are open to the public for both the men’s and women’s teams at the American Sports Center in Anaheim. On some days if time permits the practice session may be followed by an open Autograph Session.

Gus Sampras Joins USYVL Board of Directors

Gus Sampras

USYVL Head Coach Gus Sampras with the Icebreakers

We are pleased to announce that Gus Sampras has joined the USYVL Board of Directors.  Gus brings to the USYVL Board over 18 years of sports marketing experience, including 12 years at International Management Group (IMG) where he served as Vice-President of IMG Tennis.  At IMG, some of his projects included managing professional ATP and WTA tour events, developing sponsorships for Olympic and Professional Volleyball, consulting with the University of Southern California in selling the naming rights to their basketball arena, and a myriad of charitable and community benefit programs involving athletes.  In addition, he has worked in Minor League Baseball and for USYVL.  Since 1988, Gus has held the positions of Business Manager, Treasurer and  Secretary of Pistol Pete, Inc. which oversees the financial activities of retired tennis professional Pete Sampras.

“As a father of two, I believe that the USYVL is one of the best youth programs available today.  After coaching my oldest daughter for the past couple of years, I am excited that my youngest daughter will also start participating  in the Spring.  Opportunities are rare to have your children participating in the same sport at the same time and in the same place, and I feel that this is a huge benefit of USYVL.  As a member of the USYVL Board, I look forward to participating in strengthening the league across the nation” says Gus Sampras.

“Gus has a tremendous passion for kids and sports" said Randy Sapoznik, USYVL Executive Director. "His background with partnerships and running events makes him an ideal Board member for the USYVL".
